Summer may get most of the attention on Cape Cod, but ask many year-round residents and longtime second-home owners and they'll tell you that fall is one of the best times of year to be here.
The beaches are quieter. Restaurants are easier to get into. The air turns crisp while the ocean still holds some of its summer warmth. Route 6A begins to show its fall color, cranberry bogs turn brilliant shades of red, and Cape towns settle into a more relaxed pace.
It's also one of the Cape's best seasons for festivals, live music, art, theater, food and family activities.
Whether you live here year-round, own a weekend home, or are looking for an excuse to spend another fall weekend on the Cape, here are some of our favorite events and activities coming up between now and November 1, 2026.

Woods Hole has always had an interesting combination of science, art, culture and unmistakable Cape Cod character, making it a wonderful place for a fall afternoon.
This September, the Transom 25 Festival celebrates 25 years of the Transom Story Lab with three days of workshops, keynote presentations and community events.
For visitors interested in storytelling, media, culture and the creative arts, this offers something a little different from the traditional fall festival—and it's a good reason to combine an event with lunch, shopping and a walk around Woods Hole.

The Harwich Cranberry Arts & Music Festival returns September 19 and 20 at the Harwich Community Center field, bringing together more than 100 artists and crafters, food trucks, family activities and live music.
The accompanying CranJam Music Festival adds live entertainment and a dance floor, making this much more than a traditional craft fair.

The Cape Cod Canal deserves a fall celebration of its own.
Cape Cod Canal Day takes place September 19 at Buzzards Bay Park and combines food, live music, local crafts, children's activities and other entertainment alongside one of the region's defining landmarks.
For families, couples and groups of friends, this is an easygoing way to spend a Saturday without having to plan an elaborate itinerary.
Bring comfortable shoes and consider adding a walk or bike ride along the Canal before or after the festival.
Fall on Cape Cod isn't only about outdoor festivals.
The Cotuit Center for the Arts has become one of the Cape's year-round cultural anchors, and from September 24 through October 11 it presents Men on Boats, Jaclyn Backhaus' comedic retelling of the 1869 expedition to chart the Colorado River.
Performances run Thursday through Sunday during the production.
It's an excellent option for a date night or for one of those October evenings when the weather makes dinner and a show particularly appealing.
The Center's galleries are also worth exploring. Beginning October 3, its fall exhibitions include Fiber Fusion & Friends and artist Martin Kelley: Realism in Pigment and Pencil.

This is particularly good for couples or groups of friends looking to turn a Sunday drive to the Outer Cape into an experience.
Make a day of it: Take Route 6A or another scenic route toward the Outer Cape, enjoy the festival and leave enough time for an early-evening walk near the water.
If you're looking for an event that works for multiple generations, the Yarmouth Seaside Festival is one of the best bets of the fall.
The three-day festival runs October 10–12 and includes arts and crafts, live music, rides and games, children's entertainment, food, pumpkin decorating, animal and bird-of-prey programs and plenty of old-fashioned festival activities.
Saturday evening brings a beach bonfire at Bass River Beach, while Sunday night concludes with fireworks over Seagull Beach.
Monday continues the festivities with a family sand-sculpture contest and canoe/kayak race.
For grandparents with children and grandchildren visiting for the long weekend, this one offers something for nearly everyone.
Pumpkins are everywhere in New England during October.

The Sandwich Glass Museum's PumpkinFest fills the museum grounds with colorful handblown glass pumpkins created by glass artists.
The pumpkins are displayed outdoors and available for purchase, creating a fall event that combines art, local craftsmanship and one of Cape Cod's most distinctive artistic traditions.
For homeowners interested in architecture, interiors, art and locally made pieces, this may be one of the most interesting events on the list.
And unlike the pumpkin you bring home from the farm stand, this one can come back out every fall.
One of the Cape's most charming October traditions returns to Kate Gould Park in downtown Chatham.
Beginning October 12, local businesses, organizations and community members create imaginative displays using pumpkins and plenty of creativity.
Pumpkin People in the Park is free, easy to visit and particularly fun with children or grandchildren.
It's also a perfect excuse for a fall trip to downtown Chatham.
Walk Main Street, explore the shops, grab lunch or coffee, visit the Pumpkin People and finish the afternoon with a drive along the coast.
Sometimes the simplest Cape Cod days are the best ones.
For something completely different, Cirque by the Sea: Summer in the City comes to the Big Top at Wellfleet Harbor Actors Theater on October 16.
The original circus-theater production combines aerial performance, acrobatics, juggling, humor and storytelling in a fast-paced show designed for a broad audience.
If you're making a weekend of the Wellfleet OysterFest, this could also make an entertaining start to the weekend before the crowds arrive Saturday morning.
Chatham offers another reason to visit on October 17 with its annual Oktoberfest at Kate Gould Park.
The free, family-friendly event runs from 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and features live music, local vendors, family activities and a traditional beer-garden atmosphere.
Because Pumpkin People in the Park is already underway, the two events combine nicely into a full fall day in downtown Chatham.
For weekend homeowners, this is exactly the kind of October Saturday that makes keeping the Cape house open well beyond Labor Day worthwhile.
If we had to choose one signature Cape Cod food event of the fall, Wellfleet OysterFest would be difficult to beat.
The festival takes over downtown Wellfleet October 17 and 18 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., celebrating the town's world-famous oysters and shellfishing heritage.
Expect local seafood, live music, arts and crafts, culinary programming, family activities and the always-popular Oyster Shuck-Off competition.
There's also the annual Shuck and Run road race Sunday morning for anyone who prefers to earn their oysters first.
OysterFest attracts a large crowd, so this is one event where planning ahead is worthwhile. General admission for 2026 is currently listed at $35, while children 12 and under are admitted free with a reserved ticket.
For many Cape residents and visitors, OysterFest has become one of those annual traditions that officially marks the arrival of fall.
Cape Cod's relationship with cranberries extends far beyond cranberry sauce at Thanksgiving.
Through October 18, Heritage Museums & Gardens in Sandwich is presenting Cranberries: From Cape Cod to American Icon, an exhibition exploring the berry's influence on the region's history, people and landscape.
It's an especially appropriate fall visit and an interesting complement to seeing Cape Cod's brilliant red cranberry bogs during harvest season.
Combine it with a drive along Route 6A and you have a very Cape Cod way to spend a crisp October afternoon.
Not every great fall weekend on Cape Cod needs an event ticket.
October is also a wonderful time to enjoy the Cape at its simplest.
Take a drive along historic Route 6A as the foliage changes. Pick apples at Crow Farm in Sandwich. Stop for pumpkins and fall flowers. Walk a nearly empty beach. Ride the Cape Cod Rail Trail. Visit a farmers market. Explore Chatham, Harwich Port, Sandwich or Provincetown without midsummer crowds.
Or simply spend a cool afternoon at home, light the fireplace and watch the colors change outside.
That's part of the appeal of owning a home here.
For people who know Cape Cod primarily as a summer destination, September and October can be a revelation.
The pace changes.
The traffic subsides.
The landscape begins to change color, but the ocean is still right there.
